Further explanation regarding Contributions to the Field"

The rationale for and intention of this requirement is to conclusively demonstrate that the applicant has been and currently is recognized as a successful physician executive beyond the scope of her/his employment. There are many ways this can be documented and a non-inclusive listing of options is listed here:

  • Written materials such as articles that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals, or books or book chapters on medical management topics. Gaining recognition as an author and expert in such areas demonstrates contributions beyond one’s scope of employment.

If you have not as yet published a peer reviewed article on a topic or a project in administrative medical management, here is one potential pathway to developing an article. The article could be based on a particular area of your expertise or on a significant project you've designed and completed. If you need assistance locating a topic, look at ACPE's online Network discussions. Choose a topic that has 10-15 responses and then do additional research. Your article would present conclusions or solutions about the issue and run at least 1500 words.
  • Orally-presented materials such as lectures and seminars on medical management topics. These must be beyond the speaking role inherent in one’s normal scope of employment and may be local, regional or national in audience. Gaining recognition as an expert in one’s field through repeated opportunities to teach demonstrates that the applicant is making contributions to the profession.
  • Participate on a regional or national level in professional, organizational or governmental initiatives that touch on health care from a policy or regulatory perspective. Serving in the committee and management structures of such organizations provides evidence that you contribute to the profession beyond the scope of your employment.
  • Design and complete a significant project and write a paper describing your results to be peer reviewed. Example: How to solve the nursing shortage in your area.

Further explanation regarding "Participation in ACPE"

Participation in ACPE activities is another important aspect of being a Fellow. The rationale for and intention of this requirement is that Fellows are expected to contribute to the vitality of the College and the professional growth of its members. The most visible way to do this is by attending College functions on some regular basis where one can interact with College members and staff at all levels. The Fellowship applicant has thereby demonstrated a willingness and ability to network with College members and College staff. This provides the capability of influencing College activities and future direction, mentor developing members, and continue one’s personal growth in the field.

Purely on-line College activities do not fulfill this requirement, as they lack the personal interaction so important to developing long-term professional relationships. This participation should extend over several years, during which time the applicant has been able to meet and network with College members, Fellows and staff. The applicant’s CPE may have been awarded before or at any time during this period.
