Clair M. Callan, MD, MBA, CPE, FACPE, FFARCSI (hon)
ACPE Past President
Dr. Callan is CEO of Callan Consulting, a health care-oriented consulting firm that focuses on quality and patient safety and the use of health information technology in the clinical environment. The company also supports strategic planning efforts for a variety of clients and has developed leadership skills development programs for professional and not-for-profit organizations.
She and her husband, Sean, came to the United States in 1965 and are U.S. citizens. Dr. Callan has practiced anesthesia in Hartford, CT, and has also been active in the business of health care, including the Medicaid program of Connecticut; Abbott Laboratories, where she was Vice President of Medical and Regulatory Affairs; and the American Medical Association, where she was Vice President of Science, Quality and Public Health. Currently she serves on the Board of the American College of Medical Quality and the advisory council for Partnership for Prevention. She also is on the Board of the Lake County Medical Society.
Dr. Callan received her medical degree from University College Dublin and completed an anesthesiology residency at the Mater Misericordia Hospital, Dublin, Ireland. In addition to her medical degree, Dr. Callan has an MBA from the University of Phoenix. She is a certified physician executive and a Fellow of the American College of Physician Executives. She also was awarded the first honorary fellowship from the Faculty of Anesthesia, Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, on the basis of her work during the development of Sevoflurane, an inhalation anesthetic, in 1992.
