Michael M. Bakerman, MD, MMM, CPE, FACS, FACPE
Board Member
Dr. Bakerman is the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) for UMass Memorial Healthcare System. Dr. Bakerman is responsible for the clinical implementation and adoption for the system’s Siemens Soarian EMR. In his role, Dr Bakerman is also responsible for the development and deployment of a system wide integration strategy for affiliated and independent ambulatory physician practices. Prior to joining UMass Memorial, Dr Bakerman was the Associate Medical Director for Partners Healthcare in Boston. Included among his many responsibilities was the development and management of system wide P4P measures and targets. With over $100M at risk, incentive measures for quality, technology and efficiency were developed. The network achieved an 85% level of return on their selected measures.
Dr. Bakerman was also the Medical Lead for Clinical Transformation Services at Perot Systems (now a subsidiary of Dell Computer). In his role, Dr. Bakerman led efforts for the clinical implementation of both inpatient and outpatient electronic medical records, including change management, workflow redesign, governance for IS projects, specific focus on clinician adoption and benefit realization.
Dr. Bakerman is a Board Certified Cardiologist. He completed his medical school education at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1980. He completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Boston University, University Hospital in 1983 and a Fellowship in Cardiology at University Hospital in 1985. Dr. Bakerman was in private practice until 1999, when he became a fulltime healthcare consultant.
Dr. Bakerman has been an active member of ACPE since 1992, completing his Masters Degree in Medical Management at Tulane University in 1998 and his CPE in 2006. Dr. Bakerman was elected to the Board of ACPE in 2010. Among his contributions to the Board is his leadership role in the development of the Health Information Technology (HIT) Leadership Certification Program. Dr Bakerman has published a number of articles in the Physician’s Executive Journal related to HIT and physician leadership.
Dr. Bakerman is a frequent lecturer. His most recent events included the National P4P summit in San Francisco in 2010 and 2011 and the National Patient Safety Colloquium in Boston in 2010. Dr Bakerman is an associate faculty at the Tufts Healthcare Institute in Boston participating in teaching residents in internal medicine topics in managed care. Dr Bakerman has also been associate faculty at the Partners Clinical Process Improvement Program (CPIP) discussing topics in data management and analysis.
