This six-part program looks at the spread of Pay for Performance initiatives in both the private and public sectors. Elements common to these programs are explained, including the role of patient satisfaction, IT investment, and process standards vs. outcomes measures as means to measure quality.
The intended consequences (improved outcomes in chronic disease, reduced health care expenditures) are illustrated, as well as potential unintended consequences (undermining physician autonomy and decision making, potential difficulties in caring for the indigent).
The program ends with predictions for how Pay for Performance may fundamentally change American medicine, with rationale for continuing physician advocacy, education, and research.
