Conflict and Cooperation: Influence in Organizations

Course Description

Experts say some conflict is healthy, and they're right. Political races, economic competition and athletic contests are examples of healthy - or functional - conflicts. But most conflicts aren't healthy. They're called dysfunctional conflicts and, when they strike, they can make your workplace sick. Conflict can pit physicians against administrators and cause infighting among your staff. As a manager, conflict can affect you personally-making you nervous or angry. It can lead you to make rash, un-objective decisions that may be bad for business. Cooperation, on the other hand, truly is healthy. When everyone cooperates, patients see it, too. Staff morale soars, and the risk of errors is reduced dramatically. Cooperation means things get done. ACPE gives you the opportunity to learn how to reduce conflict and create cooperation. Highlights include:

  • The roots of conflict-How the seeds of conflict are built into every organization.
  • Organizational triggers of conflict: you, them, and the organization.
  • How to recognize functional and dysfunctional conflict.
  • How to acquire both power and influence, including step-by-step actions you can take.
  • Managing conflict and achieving cooperation.
  • Redesigning your own attitude and behavior toward conflict and achieving influence.
  • Improving communication by learning practical ways to be more flexible with language.
  • Developing the capability to make values-based decisions in any work situation.
  • How to respectfully influence the motivation of yourself and others.
  • How to confront disruptive physicians and establish consequences if they fail to change their behaviors.
  • How to enforce civil behavior from everyone in your organization.
  • Preparing for difficult conversations so you are clear, concise, and courageous .
