Professional Accountability: Addressing Behaviors that Undermine the Culture of Safety
Course Description
Although a profession is defined by many features, one of the most important is responsibility for the conduct of its members. Unfortunately, organizations often do not have apprpropriate strategies for dealing with behaviors that undermine a culture of safety (i.e. disruptive behavior). Left unaddressed, these behaviors lead to patient safety issues, low staff moral and cost burdens. Learn what constitutes behaviors that undermine a culture of safety, why it is vital to address them and how to utilize new skills when addressing such behaviors.
- Design a plan for identifying and addressing behaviors that undermine a culture of safety
- Understand what you need to know to put that plan into action
- Compare the relationships between behaviors that undermine a culture of safety and suboptimal outcomes;
- Identify a range behaviors that undermine a culture of safety and describe a “professional accountability pyramid”;
- Name essential elements of an organizational infrastructure for addressing behaviors that undermine a culture of safety;
- Summarize the essential elements of three graduated levels of interventions for addressing behaviors that undermine a culture of safety;
- Paraphrase pertinent legal precedents about which to be aware before taking action;
- Describe a method that may be used for identifying professionals with a pattern of behaviors that undermine a culture of safety.
